A social post has to work without the click. Most people will read it and not click, which means the post either delivered something on its own or it delivered nothing. A headline plus a link is an advertisement, and it performs the way advertisements perform.

The good news is that most posts can be derivatives of work already published and still be worth reading, because the thinking behind them was original. What cannot be derivative is the opinion.

The operational shape

Trigger. The repurposing pipeline, or a moment worth responding to.

Reads. Voice from decisions. What was published, from the pipeline. The conversation landscape, from the market map.

Cadence. A steady drumbeat, mostly derivative.

Gate. Batch approval — with one exception that is not about approval at all.

The founder-voice boundary

This is where the boundary bites hardest, because a personal account is where first-person opinion lives. An agent may draft outlines, factual scaffolding, and build-in-public substance — what shipped, what the numbers were, what broke. It may never write in the founder's first person. A draft that needs an opinion leaves a marked gap rather than inventing one.

The asymmetry is the reason. A reader forgives a machine-drafted fact and does not forgive a machine-drafted belief attributed to a person, and a disclosure cannot fix it — the disclosure explains how the post was made, while the objection is about whether the person meant it.

What good looks like

One idea per post. A post carrying three points delivers none, because the format does not support a reader holding them.

It is specific enough to be disagreed with. The posts that travel are the ones somebody wants to argue with. A post nobody could dispute is a post nobody responds to.

The build-in-public material is real. What shipped, what the number was, what went wrong. This is the most reliably interesting content a small company has, and it is the part an agent can draft honestly because it is factual.

Replies are not broadcasts. A reply in someone else's thread is a conversation. Treating it as distribution is visible immediately and it is how accounts get muted.

When it goes stale

Posts do not decay in the usual sense. The archive is the liability.

Everything published stays searchable and attributable, indefinitely, and a post from three years ago resurfaces without the context that made it reasonable. The failure is not that old posts get worse — it is that the standard for what is acceptable moves, and the archive does not.

Two other mechanisms. The account decays through inconsistency — reach is a function of regularity, and a gap costs more than the missed posts would have earned. And the platform changes underneath you, since the distribution is rented and the terms are set by someone else.

What it feeds

  • Traffic to published work — the immediate job
  • Learnings — which framings land, at a speed nothing else matches
  • Thought leadership — a post that provokes a real argument is usually a piece that should be written properly

Frequently asked

Should every post link to something?
No. A post that only exists to deliver a link is an ad, and it performs like one. The post has to be worth reading if nobody clicks.
Can an agent write social posts?
It can draft derivatives of published work and factual build-in-public updates. It may never write in the founder's first person, which is where most of the value on a personal account sits.
How much should be original versus repurposed?
Most of it can be derivative and still be good, because the underlying work was original. What cannot be derivative is the opinion, and that is the part worth a person's time.
